TURN IT INTO A DANCE PARTY!
Last night I planned a 7 mile run to help prepare me for Monday’s Tuft’s 10K but it didn’t go according to plan…
The first mile didn’t feel great – it was windy, cold and getting dark pretty quickly. Each mile kept getting worse, the wind was just so intense I felt like I was literally being held back from running, which made me work ten times harder and feel tired that much quicker. Plus, it didn’t make it easy on my breathing or pace. So, as you can see it wasn’t the best run.
But I kept pushing through because I was physically fine and my legs and lungs weren’t exhausted or hurt. I just wasn’t into it and the weather wasn’t great: reasons not good enough to give up a training run. So, I kept going. It wasn’t until mile 5 where I was ready to throw the towel in.
Picture this:
I’m right next to the ocean, it’s super windy, sand is being thrown around, my lips are chapped, my arms and legs are chilly and I am putting in a lot of effort but not going very fast and there is no one out there with me…
At this point I figured, “hey, I’ve run 5 miles, I can just go home” but then the Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO came on and I realized… I didn’t want to stop running. It was just harder than normal.
So, I started to dance. On the side of the street. Not caring if the whole world witnessed me “break it down” right then and there. And you know what? I felt SO much better!
Suddenly I had more energy and started to pick up my pace. In fact, I felt so good I started pumping my arms in the air and shaking my head to the beat. Once in awhile I would even stop and shake my booty or drop to the ground like I was in the club and it was LIBERATING. I didn’t even care how long it took me at that point, I was just enjoying moving my body and being alive.
Just going with the music and not caring about what anyone driving by thought completely turned my run around from pertty awful to so much fun. Instead of heading home at 5 miles I made it 6.7 miles and in 69 minutes! Not too shabby my friends, not too shabby.
So, next time you’re out and you’re just not feeling it, shake it up! Literally. Put on your favorite songs and just have some fun!
