April Recap: Beets, Meditation & Boxing Oh My!

Posted on: 1 May 2012

April was an excellent month.

First of all, Josh and I became roommate free this month! After living together for 4+ years this will be the first time it’s just him and me and we couldn’t be happier. We have also been spending a lot of time redecorating and reorganizing and I must say, I love our home. It’s beautiful, cozy and makes me so happy.

I had a lot of great workouts: lots of yoga, running and spinning. I even did my first brick (bike + run) of the season this past Sunday and it was awesome – I biked 4.75 miles and then ran 3 miles all in 51 minutes, which is awesome for my first brick this year.

April had super yummy food like the Whole Living 3 Day Cleanse. Oh, and I found out that I absolutely LOVE beets! They are delicious with a wonderful earthy taste and I encourage everyone to try this salad: Beet & Avocado salad - it’s seriously addicting and super nutritious.

I was inspired to take a break and unplug, which I plan on continuing throughout May.

April was also great because I had to bring in all of my pants to be taken in because I’ve lost about 8 pounds over the last 5 months! NOW do not read into this and think that I’m happy because I’m skinnier. That is not the situation at all. Rather, I’m happy because I’ve been training pretty hard and eating super clean so I was hoping to drop a few unnecessary pounds. I’m also happy because I’ve noticed that I’ve lost weight because I’ve toned up – I’m faster, stronger and leaner which is a good thing. Losing weight just to be thin is not a good thing.

As you may remember this year I’ve decided is a year for adventure - so every month I am going to try something new! This past month I did 2 new things: went to a meditation class/session and tried boxing!

I took a 25 minute meditation class at Back Bay Yoga in Boston and absolutely loved the experience. It was great being with other people that were also clearing their minds and focusing on their breaths. I also found that extending my practice to 25 minutes wasn’t hard at all (I normally only practice 3 – 5 minutes a day) and it came pretty naturally to me. There were a few times that my mind began to wonder how much longer I had, but each time I let go of those thoughts and focused in on my breath. The teacher was also quite good and helped us come into a peaceful state. Honestly I can’t wait to go back and participate in more meditation sessions.

Boxing was so much fun!! Now, I have taken kick boxing in the past but this class (at Boston Sports Club) was very different. We went around a boxing circuit and spent two minutes in each area: heavy bags, small bags, jump ropes, shadow boxing, agility work and then sparing. It was quite a workout and honestly my arms were sore for 5 days! 5 days. But it also worked my entire core as you were constantly twisting and turning. My favorite part was sparing with the teacher, Bobby, who has been doing this for over 2o years. After a few seconds of sparing Bobby realized that I was really into it and helped me focus on my posture and breathing.

Anyone that is looking for a great way to break a sweat and get out some frustration and stress you have to try boxing. Try not to be too intimated either, it took me a couple of years to work up the nerve to go and now I love it!

During April I also signed on as Managing Editor for BodiMojo - a site created to promote confidence & positivity in teens – and I joined a writing group, Chicks Who Write! In fact, this past Friday I met with the group and talked about my blog and how blogging has changed my life. They’re a really great group and I can’t wait for our next meet up.

In the Fitness world I was lucky enough to host #Fitblog for the first time which was a ton of fun!

Wow, going through my recap makes me realize how awesome April truly was! I can only imagine what May has in store for me…
