As part of the egg donation process I was asked to write a letter to the future child. Something to explain why I was doing this and who I was. Needless to say, it was much harder than I expected. I mean, I have no one to picture as I write down my dreams and hopes, just the wish for a healthy and happy child. So after some consideration I’ve decided to share some of my letter with all of you, to give you a glimmer of the hope and joy I feel in my heart…
* * * * *
Hi, I write with a grin on my face, imagining you reading this. I picture you sitting at the kitchen table across from your mom opening this letter to learn more about me. Maybe you have curly hair like me, or maybe you have my blue eyes. Either way I hope you have the best of me and know that you’re so very special.
Being an egg donor was a big decision for me but one that I made with an open heart and a soul full of hope and love. To be able to help your mom find the family that she’s been wishing and dreaming of is an honor and will always be one of the things I am most proud of. Helping someone create a family is a miracle and more important that any test, presentation or promotion.
Family is everything. And I don’t just mean your mom and uncles and grandparents. I mean the people that you surround yourself with that support and love you no matter what. I’m lucky because I’ve found an amazing family that cheers me up when I’m sad, cheers me on in the final leg of my race and stands beside me when I need someone to lean on. Family isn’t made just by blood – it’s made with love.
…
Being an egg donor is a special experience for me. It’s a chance for me to give hope and joy to someone so wonderful and deserving. Your mother is an amazing person and after meeting her I knew she’d be a wonderful parent – considerate, kind, loving, patient, supportive and so much more.
Even though I didn’t carry you or bring you up you’re still a little piece of me and with that you have a piece of my heart. And even though I may never meet you, I hope you know that I am so very proud of you and I know – deep in my heart – that you are a beautiful person inside and out.
All you need to do is believe in yourself and live life with compassion and openness. Don’t be scared of trying new things or falling down here or there. Life is a daring adventure and my wish for you is that it’s one filled with bright joy and can’t-stop-smiling happiness.
You are in my thoughts, now and forever.
With love and hope,
Erin Madore
