Learning to eat healthy is a key part of the weight loss process. Despite what popular diet programs may lead you to believe, there is no magic solution to your weight issue. If you are trying to lose weight, you have to eat fewer calories and exercise more. Skip fad diets and ridiculous exercise regimens that will only fail. By understanding nutrition, you will be able to shed excess weight and enjoy a new body.

How the Body Uses Food

Food is fuel for the body. Every person’s body needs a certain amount of caloric fuel to simply stay alive. Although people use food for other purposes, the only function of food is to keep your body functioning properly. When the body receives the exact amount of food it needs to stay alive, your weight remains the same.

If you take in more food than your body needs to operate, you will store fat and gain weight. If you take in less food than your body needs, you will lose weight. The key to permanent weight loss is to figure out exactly how much food your body needs and to eat less than that amount.

How Much Should I Eat?

Many people are searching for nutrition information that will help them make the right food choices. The first step in creating a healthy eating plan is to determine your resting metabolic rate. This rate is the number of calories that you will burn simply by being alive. These calories are used every day of your life. This is your base.

To gain one pound, you will have to consume 3,500 calories more than your basal metabolic rate. To lose one pound, you will have to consume 3,500 calories less than your basal metabolic rate. When your body doesn’t get an adequate amount of calories per day, it starts to burn excess fat. For most people, weight loss of one pound per week means cutting back 500 calories a day.

Cutting back 500 calories a day isn’t a drastic amount. For most people, that amounts to cutting out one soft drink and holding off on a second helping at dinner. By adding in regular exercise, you can burn even more calories and lose weight faster. Some people will notice a weight change immediately. For others, the process will be more gradual.

What Should I Eat?

A food pyramid or chart can help you select a variety of foods to fuel your body. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains is ideal for weight loss. Empty calories like soft drinks, alcohol and candy offer no nutritional benefits. Consume them sparingly. Start with your heaviest, most calorie-dense meal in the morning, and gradually eat less until bedtime. This will help your body burn the calories you have consumed quickly.

To  lose weight and keep it off, get the right fuel for your body.
